Patrick McGrath

I am a clinical psychologist who works across a variety of presentations including anxiety and mood disorders. I hope to bring a warm, empathic and authentic approach to the issues that people bring to therapy. I recognise the investment that people make when they share their difficulties with someone and commit to therapy, and work to honour that commitment by delivering evidence based treatments, that are tailored to each person’s needs.

I’ve benefitted greatly from the experience of working across a range of inpatient and outpatient hospital settings. I’ve worked with children through to older adults, and have come to primarily focus on the treatment of adults. This experience has taught me to value the lived experience that someone brings to treatment and to work collaboratively to achieve their goals.

Alongside private practice, I currently work in a public health setting supporting the needs of the LGBTIQA+ community. Within this role I have gained valuable experience regarding some of the specific challenges that arise for individuals from the LGBTIQA+ community. I seek to always hold an affirming and non-judgemental stance in the work I do.

I have found working in the eating disorders space incredibly fulfilling. I acknowledge that people frequently feel ambivalent about challenging their eating disorder. While they recognise the issues it presents, their eating disorder has often helped them to cope with distressing issues in their life, and so the prospect of change is daunting. My approach is to meet people where they’re at, work with them to resolve the tension between their desire for, and fear of change. Working with individuals to feel in control of their eating behaviour, as well as addressing the issues that prompted their eating disorder, is challenging and rewarding work.

I understand that eating disorders can, and do, impact people in all different kinds of bodies, and that stigma regarding weight and shape often disrupts or delays people accessing treatment. I believe that anyone struggling with an eating disorder, body image, or eating concerns should be able to access treatment without fear of judgement.

For health clinicians seeking supervision or training, I am a board approved supervisor. Please refer to the Training and Supervision tab for more information on my relevant experience in supervising and providing training to psychologists and other health professionals.
